C13-55-0385 and -0386A*S Combination for Foreign Filing CROSSLINKED CRYSTALLINE POLYMER FOR COOLING AND HEATING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a method for storage and recovery of heat from crosslinked crystalline polymer. Usually the polymer will be in the form of a fixed bed of polymer pieces, however, fluidized or moving bed pieces are also operable in the method by circulating a heating or cooling fluid through the bed. The polymer can also be in other form than pieces for the heating or cooling operation, i.e., sheets of polymer, long fibers either solid or hollow in a heat exchanger, or the heat exchanger can be molded from the polymer provided suitable passages for passage of heat exchange fluid. The fluid can be either a gas or a liquid which has no appreciable solubility for the polymer, air and ethylene glycol being suitable for use when poly- ethylene is the polymer, and water can be used as the fluid provided sufficient pressure is applied to keep the water in liquid form. More particularly the invention relates to crystalline polyethylene pieces having optimum crosslinking for use in storage and recovery of heat. Crystalline polymer pieces are described which retain at least 70% of the heat of fusion of the uncrosslinked crystalline polymer and yet are sufficiently crosslinked for the pieces not to stick together upon being cycled above and below the melting point of said polymer, preferably at least 80% of the heat of fusion with no substantial sticking together.
