ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Articles or semiproducts from 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate gels, which are crosslinked with not more than 2% of ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, are swelled with aqueous alkaline hydroxide and moderately heated in an excess of aqueous agent until the covalent network is reorganized by interruption of the stretched cross-links and formation of new cross-links in the swollen state corresponding to more than 40% of water at swelling to equilibrium at 20°C. After washing off the hydroxide with water, the swelling capacity is substantially higher than the original swelling of about 40%. The swelling capacity and internal stress are further somewhat decreased and the strength and elasticity are increased by insertion into physiologic saline. This modification does not affect the transparency.
