A polymer is formed of ethylenically unsaturated monomers including a, zwitterionic monomer, an aromatic monomer and a cross-linking monomer. Preferably the crosslinking monomer includes at least one aromatic group containing compound and at least one aliphatic group containing compound. The polymer is water-swellable and a hydrogel has optical and mechanical properties rendering it suitable for use as an intraocular refractive device such as an intraocular lens.

L'invention se rapporte à un polymère composé de monomères éthyléniquement insaturés, et notamment un monomère bipolaire, un monomère aromatique et un monomère de réticulation. De préférence, le monomère de réticulation comporte au moins un composé contenant un groupe aromatique et au moins un composé contenant un groupe aliphatique. Ledit polymère peut gonfler dans l'eau et un hydrogel contenant ledit polymère présente des caractéristiques mécaniques et optiques qui en font un hydrogel pouvant être utilisé en tant que dispositif de réfraction intraoculaire du type lentille intraoculaire.
