Apparatus for crushing metal containers, and having, a fixed platen on which a container may rest, a moveable platen for carrying a moveable die towards and away from the fixed platen the moveable die platen being moveable downwardly and upwardly along a predetermined axis, a single ended air cylinder closed at one end, and open at the other end, having a central axis aligned with the crushing axis, an air piston moveable within the open ended air cylinder, an air inlet for admitting air to the closed end of the air cylinder, for moving the piston along the crushing axis towards the open end, and, a return device connected to the moveable platen, to permit the moveable platen to move downwardly along the crushing axis, and being moveable in the reverse direction when pressure is released, so as to move the moveable platen along the crushing axis away from the fixed platen .
