ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for the cryogenic treatment of materials. In accordance with the invention, the materials are cooled to a temperature which is close to the temperature of the liquid nitrogen. The apparatus includes a treatment chamber which is cooled, by means of a heat exchanger arrangement, to a temperature close to the temperature of liquid nitrogen. The coolant for the heat exchanger would be liquid nitrogen. An additional coolant such as liquid helium or liquid natural gas, could be used to adjust the cooling rate.
