This invention is cryo-coolers (10) for use in cryosurgery, and other applications comprising finned tube helical heat exchanger (20), and a flow directing sheath (30) covering portions of the heat exchanger coil and isolating portions of the heat exchanger coil from the outer sheath (11) of the cryo-cooler. The size and shape of ice balls created by the probes is controlled by the extent and location of the flow directing sheath.

L'invention concerne des refroidisseurs cryogéniques (10) destinés à la cryochirurgie, ainsi qu'à d'autres applications comportant un échangeur thermique (20) à tubes et ailettes et un manchon dirigeant l'écoulement (30). Ce dernier recouvre certaines parties du serpentin échangeur et isole certaines parties dudit échangeur par rapport au manchon externe (11) du refroidisseur cryogénique. La taille et la forme des billes de glace produites par les sondes sont déterminées par la longueur et la localisation du manchon dirigeant l'écoulement.
