A cryptographic method and apparatus for saving computing operations or computation time while retaining or increasing security. Computation time to perform modular exponentiation is reduced and recovery of information on prime factorization based on a faulty result of a disturbed modular exponentiation is prevented. The method includes performing at least one computing step containing a modular exponentiation E according to E = x d (mod p.cndot.q), with a first prime factor p, a second prime factor q, an exponent d and a number x, whereby the modular exponentiation E is calculated according to the Chinese Remainder Theorem.

L'invention concerne un procédé cryptographique comprenant au moins une étape de calcul contenant une exponentiation modulaire E selon E = xd (mod p.q), avec un premier facteur premier p, un second facteur premier q, un exposant d et un nombre x, l'exponentiation E étant calculée selon le taux de valeur résiduelle chinois.
