A crystal forming apparatus (300) and method for using the apparatus (300), the apparatus (300) including a plate (100) and a film (200). The plate (100) has a site adapted to hold a screening solution (504). The film (200) is adjacent to the plate. The film (200) seals the site and is adapted to contain a precipitant solution (506) inside the site with an air gap between the screening solution (504) and the precipitant solution. In a preferred embodiment, the film (200) is transparent. In another preferred embodiment, the plate (100) comprises a second transparent film (528) supported by a lattice structure and the precipitant solution (506) is sandwiched between the two films.
