A crystalline form of nefazodone and a process for the preparation thereof are disclosed. The crystalline form, or crystalline nefazodone hydrochloride dehydrate, has the chemical name of 2-[3-[4-(3-chlorophenyl)- 1-piperazinyl]propyl]-5-ethyl-2,4-dihydro-4-(2-phenoxyethyl)-3H-1,2,4- triazol-3-one hydrochloride dehydrate and formula (see formula I) The process comprises preparing the crystalline nefazodone hydrochloride dehydrate by crystallising nefazodone hydrochloride dehydrate from an organic solvent/water mixture comprising at least 0.2 parts by volume of an organic solvent for each part by volume of water.
