A cultivator for towing by a tractor or similar vehicle for use in cultivating rows of plants has rotary tines including at least one substantially vertically oriented set of rotary tines, and a shield for each row of plants. The vertically oriented set of tines are arranged to cultivate the soil on each side of a row of plants and throw some soil towards the shield. A drive is provided for the rotary tines. The tines, drive and shield are supported by a support structure on the tractor or like vehicle.
