A culture vessel having a base section made from a plastic material is provided in a columnar or frustoconical shape. A side wall is attached to the base section of the vessel to form a basin over the upper surface of the base section. The lower surface of the base section is optically connected to the light-entrance window of an image pickup device. The base section acts as an optical wave guide capable of guiding light between the upper and lower surfaces of the base section.
