A B S T R A C T A culture collecting kit and a method of taking a culture sample are disclosed herein. The culture collecting kit comprises a sterile film package which is divided to provide first and second compartments. A growth media jelly is located in the first compartment and a swab is located in the second compartment. A rupturable seal is provided at a free end remote from the first compartment for providing access to one end of the swab. The swab includes a stick having a head which carries means for taking the culture sample. A first transverse rupturable seal is located between two transverse permanent seal portions which project into the package between the compartments. The transverse permanent seal portions define a tapered guide at the end of the second compartment adjacent the first compartment for guiding the swab head against the rupturable seal. The method of taking the culture sample comprises steps of provid- ing a growth medium jelly in the first compartment, opening the film package by rupturing the pealable seal to expose an end portion of the stick, grasping only the end portion, removing the swab from the second compartment, utilizing the swab to obtain a culture sample, initiating return of the swab into the second compartment, breaking off the stick end portion, removing an end portion of the film package between a new end and the stick and the pealable seal and then reseal- ing the film package.
