The present invention has as an object thereof to provide techniques for efficiently culturing embryogenic cells of coniferous trees, and furthermore, for forming large amounts of somatic embryos of coniferous trees. In a liquid medium, culturing is conducted at a cell density exhibiting a tendency for embryogenic cells to acquire the morphology of spherical cell clusters, and spherical cell clusters are caused to multiply, and furthermore, culturing is conducted at a cell density exhibiting a tendency for embryogenic cells to acquire the morphology of suspensor extension cell clusters, and maturation to suspensor extension cell clusters is conducted. 50
