ABSTRACT Highway and railroad culverts, with or without modification, have been susceptible of being blocked by the natural instincts and industry of beavers, causing flooding and conditions hazardous to human life. In this invention, the culvert opening is modified by the up-stream excavation of a catch basin and the attachment of a beaver-proof water flow control device to the existing culvert. This device consists of a vertical inlet pipe extending into the catch basin to a depth sufficient to conceal the bottom flow of the water from beavers. The device also conceals the culvert opening where beavers usually start their dams. Sufficient water in the catch basin is maintained by the addition, as necessary, of stop blocks vertically inside the unit. The flow of water is not restricted as the device allows water to flow through the existing culvert at its maximum capacity. The device is adaptable to round or square culverts and can be insulated to control winter ice build-up.
