A curling stone has an annular running surface. The ratio of the radius of the running surface to the radius of the curling stone is significantly greater than it is in conventional curling stones. This provides increased curl under similar conditions as compare;d to prior art curling stones. Existing curling stones may be equipped with inserts which provide a running surface according to the invention.
