A Current Transformer Demagnetizing Circuit (1) for demagnetizing ordinary current transformers while the current transformers remain in service. Once demagnetized, ordinary current transformers are able to accurately sense non-symmetrical currents, including a-c currents that have d-c components. Devices that incorporate the invention will usually utilize two modes of operation sequentially: 1. a demagnetizing mode, during which the current transformer is demagnetized, and 2. a current-sensing mode, during which current transformer secondary current is sensed. The invention comprises an adjustable impedance (2) with suitable control means (3). The invention is suitable for use with current monitoring systems that derive operating power from the current transformer secondary current, as well as more common applications that do not derive power from the current transformer secondary current.
