A method and system are presented for identifying a customer in a commercial transaction using less than complete identifying information. A credit card purchase transaction is described wherein a name (24) for the customer is removed from the credit card. A trade area is then determined for the point of sale (20) utilizing historical sales at that point of sale. The trade area is then used to restrict a search of a demographic database (32) to find a list of potential identity matches (38) having names similar or identical to the name (24) on the credit card. A best match generator (40) then creates a profile (150) of the expected purchaser of the products in the transaction. Using demographic information about each identity in the list of potential identity matches (38), each identity is compared to the profile (150) and given a score (156). Scores (156) can also be created by examining past purchases, or by examining the strength of the name match. The highest scoring identity is then considered the best match (46). The best match identity (46) is then assumed to be the identity involved in the transaction, and the customer database (34) is updated to reflect this determination.

L'invention porte sur un système et un procédé d'identification d'un client lors d'une transaction commerciale en utilisant des informations moins que complètes, et sur une transaction d'achat au moyen d'une carte de crédit dont le nom (24) du client a été effacé. On peut également établir des notes en examinant les achats antérieurs ou le niveau de concordance du nom. La note la plus élevée est considéré comme étant la meilleure concordance (46), donc comme étant l'identité participant à la transaction. Finalement, la base de données du client est actualisée pour refléter cette conclusion.
