An embodiment of the invention is directed to a method for producing a customized, vision correcting lens. The method includes the steps of supplying a custom lens supply platform with a suitable form of ocular aberration data including a higher--order wavefront aberration data, and making a custom lens using said ocular aberration data. The method is particularly characterized by providing a mark on a non- customized trial lens that identifies the geometric centre of the trial lens, fitting the trial lens on the eye of the patient, and obtaining the wavefront aberration data from the patient's eye along an axis that passes through the geometric center of the lens. In various aspects, the customized, vision correcting lens may be a contact lens, an IOL, a corneal in- lay or a corneal on-lay. The customized, vision correcting lens may be fabricated by laser ablating a surface of the lens, lathing a surface of the lens, cast-molding a surface of the lens or otherwise machining a surface of the lens.
