An apparatus is disclosed for the rendering of shapes upon a material. The material may be paper, sheet plastic or metal, gasket material, fabric, or other substance. Rendering may include operations such as applying a marking upon a surface of the material, inscribing a marking, cutting, trimming, and the like. The apparatus includes a housing having an axis of rotation and a constraining device; an arm radially disposed, movable radially and extendably with respect to the housing when the constraining device is disengaged, and including a rendering tool and a cam follower; and a means for engaging the axis of rotation with the material. With the constraining device engaged, the arm is radially fixed with respect to the housing and the apparatus may be used to render a circle. The apparatus further includes a cam having a shape which is to be rendered upon the material, and is used to render the shape with the constraining device disengaged and the cam follower engaged with the cam. The rendering tool is swivelably mounted to the arm in the manner of a castered wheel, whereby its line of action is maintained substantially tangential to the path of the shape being rendered during the course of the cam follower's circumnavigating the cam.
