ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cutter for squared timber hewing comprises a cutter disk adapted to rotate by an axis and being in the shape of a truncated cone, having a mantle surface on which are affixed successive cutter bits in helical configuration. Cutting takes place with each cutter bit in its turn, starting at the outer periphery of the cutter cone and proceeding inward. The cutter bit has two cutting edges defining an obtuse angle therebetween. One edge moves in parallel with the grain of the timber and the other edge moves obliquely with reference to the grain of the timber. Hewing of the square timber is effected by feeding the trunk between two opposing cutters or pairs of cutters. The cut- ter bit is affixed to the cutter disk such that the cutter bit's edge cutting in the direction of the grain extends radially out- wardly with respect to the axis of rotation.
