ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for severing a continuous rod-like member into separate elements during axial movement along a predetermined path through a severance zone. The device comprises a ledger for engaging and maintaining the member in the path during its passage through the zone. A cutting knife is moved along an endless course substantially at right angles to the path. The course intersects transversely with the path to sever the member. The knife is moved at a greater speed whilst it is travelling across the path than in other parts of its movement. The device permits the cutting of relatively long lengths, compared with prior devices, and in cutting shorter lengths, may not require a uni- versal joint as in the prior art.
