A cutting apparatus and a method are disclosed for cutting a plurality of articles from a sheet or web of material. A knife (14) can be formed in or secured to the outer surface of a rotary die cutter. The knife (14) includes a first cutting member (40) having a first end (42), and second and third cutting members joined to the first end of the first cutting member. The second and third cutting members are arranged relative to one another to form an arcuate section (18, 50) which intersects with the first cutting member (40) to form a general wishbone configuration. A unique knife profile enables two adjacently arranged articles to be cut simultaneously from a sheet or web of material with zero clearance between at least a portion of the outer peripheries of the two articles.

L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé de coupe permettant de couper plusieurs articles dans une feuille ou une bande continue de matière. On peut former un couteau (14) sur la surface extérieure d'une matrice de coupe rotative ou le fixer à cette surface. Le couteau (14) comprend un premier élément de coupe (40) comportant une première extrémité (42), un deuxième et un troisième élément de coupe étant rattachés à la première extrémité du premier élément de coupe. Les deuxième et troisième éléments de coupe sont disposés l'un par rapport à l'autre de manière à former une section en forme d'arc (18, 50) en intersection avec le premier élément de coupe (40) pour présenter une configuration générale de biellette. Un profil de couteau unique permet de couper deux articles disposés côte à côte dans une feuille ou une bande continue de matière, un espacement nul étant défini entre au moins une partie des contours extérieurs des deux articles.
