A cutting balloon for use in a PTCA atherectomy procedure includes an elongated balloon (22) that defines a longitudinal axis (33) and is inflatable from a first deflated configuration to a second radially expanded configuration. One or more incising elements (44) are mounted on the inflatable balloon. Compressible sheaths (50) made of a relatively low durometer, flexible material are mounted on the balloon to protect the operative cutting surface of a respective incising element during assembly of the cutting balloon and transit of the cutting balloon to the treatment site. Each sheath extends farther from the longitudinal axis than the corresponding incising element and makes first contact with the tissue during a balloon inflation. Once contact has been established between the tissue and the sheath, further balloon inflation causes the sheath to radially compress between the tissue and the inflatable balloon exposing the operative cutting surface for tissue incision.
L'invention concerne un ballonnet tranchant pour athérectomie PTCA (angioplastie coronaire transluminale percutanée), avec ballonnet allongé (22) qui définit un axe longitudinal (33) et est gonflable depuis une première configuration dégonflée vers une seconde configuration gonflée. Un ou plusieurs éléments d'incision (44) sont montés sur le ballonnnet. Des manchons compressibles (50) en matériau flexible à coefficient de dureté relativement faible sont montés sur le ballonnet pour protéger la surface trancxhante opérationnelle des différents éléments d'incision durant l'assemblage du ballonnet et le transfert du ballonnet vers le site de traitement. Chaque manchon s'étend plus loin de l'axe longitudinal que l'élément d'incision correspondant et établit un premier contact avec le tissu durant le gonflement du ballonnet. Une fois le contact établi entre le tissu et le manchon, le gonflement ultérieur du ballonnet comprime le manchon de façon radiale entre le tissu et le ballonnet, exposant ainsi la surface tranchante opérationnelle pour l'incision du tissu.
