A cutting device for a wire-removing machine for severing the tying wires of bales, especially of pulp bales, consists essentially of two elongate knives (5, 6) which can be pushed to and fro relative to one another and which are equipped on each of their cutting sides with a tooth row consisting of teeth (16, 17) arranged at regular intervals in succession and having an undercut on their flanks located at the front in the cutting direction. So that the cutting moment is defined exactly and at the same time to ensure that a gripping device retains the tying wires reliably even before they are severed by the cutting device, the front flanks (18, 19) of the teeth (16, 17) each have at their lower ends, in the region of the tooth root, a receiving pocket (21, 22) for at least one tying wire, the rear ends of the receiving pockets (21, 22) being designed as a cutting edge (24). The front flanks (18, 19) of the teeth (16, 17) are designed as obtuse sliding faces in their portion between the tooth tip (20) and the respective receiving pocket (21 or 22). (Figure 1)
