The present invention relates to a cutting insert (10) for enhanced chip control. The insert includes a rake surface (75) extending partially along a side cutting edge (70a) of the insert to a transition location (T) and extending inwardly toward the center of the insert. A deflecting surface (80) extends upwardly and inwardly toward the center of the insert from the rake surface (75) and beyond the transition location (T) extends upwardly and inwardly from the side cutting edge (70a).
