The present invention provides a replaceable cutting insert (20) for use in a cutting tool. The cutting insert has a recess (32, 54) with flat and non- coplanar side surfaces (26) on either side of the recess. The cutting insert is retained in an insert pocket (62) of the cutting tool (58, 60) by three- point contact (P1, P2, P3) between contact edges (70, 72) of the pocket (62) and points on the side edges (34) of the recesses (32, 54) on two adjacent side surfaces of the insert.
