The invention relates to a cutting insert (10) with 8 usable cutting edges and with large longitudinal surfaces, each comprising a protruding rib (20) in the center along their longitudinal axes. The cutting edges (13) defining said longitudinal surfaces form an angle of 70°< (90°-.beta.)< 90° with their respective ends and the short rounded edges (14) of the upper and lower surfaces (11, 12). According to the invention, milling tools are fitted with a plurality of such cutting inserts.

L'invention concerne une plaquette de coupe (10) pourvue de huit arêtes de coupe utilisables et de grandes surfaces longitudinales, comprenant chacune, au milieu, le long de leur axe longitudinal, une nervure (20) faisant saillie. Les arêtes de coupe (13) délimitant les dites surfaces longitudinales forment un angle de 70 DEG <(90 DEG - beta )<90 DEG avec leur extrémité respective et les arêtes (14) courtes arrondies de la surface supérieure et de la surface inférieure (11, 12). Des outils de fraisage selon l'invention sont pourvus d'une pluralité de telles plaquettes de coupe.
