A cutting mat to sample different materials for scientific analysis is manufactured from an extruded flat transparent polymer sheet of variable size and thickness. In this invention the operator places the material to be sampled on the cutting mat. Using a sharp cutting device, varying downward pressure is applied to the material through the cutting device until contact is made between the sharp end of the cutting device and the top surface of the cutting mat below the material. A sample is cut from the material for scientific analysis. The cutting action allows penetration of the mat surface but not perforation. The mat surface is scored with a cut line from the cutting device which leaves a permanent visual record of the shape and location of the cut line produced on the mat when cutting a sample from the material. This visual record of the cut line identifies prior cuts on the mat allowing the user to avoid these areas when the mat is re-used for cutting samples from other materials on the same mat. This eliminates possible cross contamination of the cutting device as well as contamination to subsequently prepared samples cut from other materials using the same mat surface. The cutting mat may be reused for repeat sampling of dry materials provided the operator uses the visual record of the prior cuts to avoid overlap of prior cut lines. Viscous or liquid materials such as human or animal tissue should be limited to one sample cut per cutting mat and the mat disposed after each use. The transparent feature of the mat allows for transmission of different light wavelengths applied to a material for isolation of a particular sample and also allows the mat to be placed over printed documents which may be referred to during the sampling procedure. The mat possesses two cutting sides but may be produced with optional printing on one side that is readable from the opposite active cutting side. A removable two- way adhesive strip may be used on either side of the mat to hold the mat to a working surface thereby reducing slippage and freeing the user to use both hands for sampling instead of one hand to hold the mat and sample stable in position while operating the cutting device. This prevent slippage and reduces potential accidents. The mat may be flexed into shallow funnel to guide the cut sample onto other surfaces or into a collecting vessel.
