A cutting tool includes one or more cutting portions (16), each including an insert pocket (18) having a cutting insert (20) releasably retained therein. The cutting insert (20) has a bottom surface (24), including a plurality of surfaces, engaging a plurality of walls of the insert pocket (18) in a plurality of sloping (38) and non-sloping (72,74) engagement regions. These engagement means provide secure and stable clamping of the cutting insert (20), and prevent displacement of the cutting insert (20) during intensive cutting operations, such as high speed milling, e.g., by significantly decreasing the force exerted on the screw (58) that fastens the cutting insert (20) in the insert pocket (18).
