A cutting tool (1) such as a drill (2) or reamer (35) for machining a bore (3) in a workpiece (4) is provided with at least one chamfered cutting edge (5) on its distal end having an enlarged radial extent. The chamfered edge (5) is defined between a tapered leading end (22), and an undercut end (23), and has a radial extent about 2.5 % greater than the radial extent (R1) of the shaft (7) of the tool. At least 40 % of the length of the chamfered edge (5) is substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the tool shaft (7).
