ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A straightedge is disclosed for use in guiding a power tool for cutting a straight line on work stock having a top surface, a side edge and a work stock corner formed by the intersection between the top surface and the side edge. The straightedge includes a planar cross member adapted to overlie the work stock parallel to the direction of cutting. The cross member provides a guiding edge for the power tool. A planar back plate member is connected to the straightedge to be coplanar with the cross member and extends orthogonally to the didrection of cutting and overlies the work stock. The back plate has spaced apart outer and inner terminal edges located in the plane containing the back plate and the cross member. Flanges are formed on the outer terminal edge to project beyond both sides of the plane containing the back plate and the cross member to abut the work stock side edge and position the back plate member on the work stock top surface, with its inner edge located above and in contact with the top surface so that the back plate is supported on top of the work stock top surface. Consequently, the straightedge is supported in guiding orientation on the work stock by the work stock top surface. The flanges are tapered toward the guiding edge to avoid obstruction with an overhang of the power tool. The straight- edge may further include an indicator member for use in establishing the offset required between the straightedge and a cutting blade of a power tool. The indicator member may be either a trapezoidal elongated bar with a notch in an edge of the bar or a pair of parallel rails with a bracket adjustable along the rails to positions corresponding to the relevant offset.
