ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cyanide free composition for determining the total concentration of hemoglobins in a blood sample. The composition comprises an effective amount of a solution comprising acetone or a solution of an ionic surfactant at a pH sufficiently basic for the denaturation of hemoglobin and oxidation of the heme iron in said hemoglobin to form an oxidized heme-product, the absorption maxima of which is in the visible range. A method for determining thetotal concentration of hemoglobins in a blood sample is also disclosed.
