The present invention relates to the use of an agent which increases cellular levels of cAMP to induce resistance to HIV-1 in a patient, which comprises administering the agent to the patient to cause downregulation of CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) expression, and thereby inducing resistance to HIV-1. The agent is selected from the group consisting of a .beta.-adrenergic agonist, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, a prostaglandin analog and a cAMP analog.
