Case 3019 CYCLOCONVERTER CONTROL SYSTEM WITH VAR REGULATOR ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A control system for a cycloconverter fed synchronous motor drive system has an input which provides a signal representing a desired speed. This is compared to an actual speed signal and the difference is a signal representing a desired torque. An absolute value of the signal representing desired torque is proportional to a desired current which will produce the desired torque and this is used by a function generator to obtain a signal representing load angle. A VAR regulator receives signals from sensors on the stator windings of the synchronous motor, and the signals it provides represent the voltages and currents for each phase. From these signals the VAR regulator obtains a representation of motor VAR. The signal which represents motor VAR is integrated and limited to provide a load angle correction signal. The load angle correction signal is summed with the load angle signal to provide a corrected load angle signal. A sensor provides a rotor position signal which is summed with the corrected load angle signal to provide a signal representing flux angle. A vector rotator receives the signal representing flux angle and the signal desired current and it provides control signals to the cycloconverter to control its operation so that the stator current which it provides is at right angles to the stator flux over a wide operating range. The control system may reduce the load angle correction signal at low stator currents because the signals representing stator currents tend to become inaccurate at low current levels, and the load angle correction signal is partly based on these stator current signals. The control system may also provide a closed loop stator voltage regulator for controlling exciter current provided to the rotor windings.
