A surface finishing apparatus and process provides for finishing and removing imperfections from the surface of a cylindrical workpiece, such as a gravure cylinder, using a polishing pad with an abrasive surface that is driven over the surface of the cylinder. The finish pattern achieved by the process and apparatus is a crisscrossing or overlapping series of curved lines with spaces therebetween, which gives the cylinder surface a roughness that is substantially the same in the direction of the axis and the radius of the cylinder. The finish is applied in the direction of the web, provides excellent control of the movement of the web over the cylinder, increases cylinder life, reduces doctor blade wear, and provides improved clarity and quality of print using the finished cylinder. The time needed to finish a cylinder is reduced over known methods, and the apparatus and process provided are cost and time effective.
