(1) A new enzyme which selectively hydrolyzes D-pantolactone in D,L-pantolactone and which has the following characteristics: (a) action: it acts on pantolactone to give the corresponding acid; (b) specificity for substrate: it acts specifically on D-pantolactone but not on L-pantolactone; (c) pH stability: it is stable at pH5-9; (d) optimal pH: 7.0 - 7.5; (e) optimal temperature: ca. 50°C; and (f) effect of various metal ions or inhibitors: it is inhibited by Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu2+ or EDTA, as well as a process for the preparation thereof.
