A D ring fastener assembly, including a D ring with a straight side and a webbing strap wrapped around the straight side of the D ring, has a plastics material bushing between the webbing strap and the D ring. The bushing minimizes stress and wear on the strap. In order to install the bushing on conventional, pre manufactured D rings, the bushing is slit from end to end. The slit in the bushing wall can be opened to receive the D ring. In preferred embodiments, the strap is fixed to the bushing with an adhesive.
