ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A damper control device for preventing freezing of fruit and vegetables in a cold storage area includes a cylinder with closed ends for mounting on the side of a cold air inlet duct, a piston slidably mounted in the cylinder, the cylinder on one side of the piston being filled with water, a return spring in the cylinder on the other side of the piston, a piston rod extending outwardly from such other side of the piston through the end of the cylinder, and a lever pivotally connected to the outer free end of the piston rod and extending into the duct for engaging a damper cover plate. The cover plate is biased to the open position by the lever for admitting cold air into the cold storage area. When the water in the cylinder freezes and expands, the piston rod moves out of the cylinder to rotate the lever and the cover plate to the closed position, and when the ice melts, the spring moves the piston rod into the cylinder to rotate the lever and cover plate to the open position.
