ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A damper for controlling the flow of fluid in a conduit has a valve element movable into and retractable from a slot bounded by two abutments spaced axially of the conduit. The valve element includes two parallel valve plates. The damper has a scissors- type mechanism connected with a valve element and operative for moving the plates apart from one another and into sealing engage- ment with the respective abutment when the valve element is located in the slot. A rod is provided movable in a direction normal to the axial direction of the conduit, which rod is operatively con- nected to the valve element and to scissors arms of the scissors- type mechanism so as to be able to move the valve element into and to retract the same from the slot and also to pivot the scissors arms. -1-
