ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In order to obtain a clean-cut print, especially one free from so-called "gearmarks", the metering roll, in a damping unit for an offset printing machine comprising a pair of rolls consisting of an applicator-roll and a metering roll, is driven, as a single roll of the said pair of rolls, by a gearwheel meshing with a driving gear of a gear-train, while the applicator-roll is driven solely by friction, braking torques, acting upon the applicator-roll at a higher peripheral velocity than a plate-cylinder associated therewith, compensating the metering roll to such an extent that the said applicator-roll rotates, with the damping unit in the running-on position, at a peripheral velocity of the order of 0.5 - 2% less than that of the said plate-cylinder.
