ABSTRACT The darkening device consists of a cell extending over the entire pane or over a part thereof. The said cell comprises transparent electrode- layers arranged in parallel with each other, to which an electrical voltage may be applied. At least one of these electrode-layers is provided on the inside with an electrochrome coating. The internal chamber of the said cell is filled with an electrolyte containing ions. When an electrical voltage of about 2 volts is applied to the said electrode-layers, the ions migrate to the said electrochrome coating which becomes coloured. When the voltage is switched off, the positive ions return to the electrolyte and the said electrochrome coating becomes transparent again.
