ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A self-contained data acquisition device or probe capable of monitoring any physical function that can be translated into an analog or digital signal. Examples of the physical functions which could be monitored include data from pasturizers, retorts, rotating shaft equipment, or furnaces and ovens. The data acquisition probe is coupled to a separate translator whereat the stored analog or digital voltage signals are transferred to the translator to be coupled to a display device for displaying the voltage signals. In a specific embodiment, when measuring the temperature of a can in an oven, a self-contained battery- operated data acquiring device is supported from the can conveyor adjacent to and electrically coupled with a can having a thermo- couple attached thereto. The voltage output from the thermocouple is monitored by the data probe at predetermined time intervals, and the data is stored in its internal memory. After the probe immerges from the oven, its data is transferred to a translator which converts the information to a display signal for display on standard recorders. Since the transport velocity is known, a plot of temperature verses time can be converted into one of temperature versus position within the oven.
