2079475 9115926 PCTABS00007 In a method of aligning a data receiver (2) with a data transmission from, e.g., a head-end station (1), data is encoded for transmission with a hybrid differential coding scheme including at least one invalid codeword, and the coding scheme for the differential part of the codewords includes the invalid codeword(s) used for word alignment of the receiver (2). At the receiver (2) the data is detected in phase with a local clock. The phase of the local clock is modified in response to any occurrence in the detected data of an invalid codeword.
