DATA AND MECHANISM PROTECTION METHOD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A technique for accessing a DAT tape for recording or reading which reduces tape, head, and mechanism wear while providing for efficient throughput. The technique includes the steps of engaging a PAUSE mode of operation when data is not being read or recorded, wherein the tape reel motors are turned off so that tape tension is re- laxed, and the tape is stationarily positioned at location that depends on whether the drive is in the record or read mode. If the drive is in the record mode, the tape is stationarily positioned so that the tape heads traverse an area of the tape that is ahead of the data that was just recorded. If the drive is in the read mode, the tape is stationarily positioned so that the tape heads traverse an area of the tape that is behind the data that is next in sequence to the data that was just read. If the amount of time the PAUSE mode is engaged without any data being recorded or read exceeds a prede- termined PAUSE mode limit, a STOP mode is engaged wherein the pinch roller is disengaged from the tape and capstan. While either the PAUSE mode or STOP mode is engaged, a determination is repeatedly made as to whether data can be recorded or read, and if so, the data is recorded or read.
