A data communication system which operates by the use of a main channel, and also a protection channel to back up the main channel using a channel switching means, between a receiver and a transmitter. A receiver side channel switching means includes a delay means for delaying the main channel data. A transmitter side channel switching means includes a delay means for delaying the protection channel data when switching channels when a transmission fault occurs. The thus delayed data is effective for preventing a stoppage of data flow even in the event of a sudden transmission fault.
