A method of compressing an image frame composed of an array of pixels in the form of digital electrical signals, the method comprising the steps of:(a) prodding a ,reference image as a first approximation to the original image to be compressed; (b) dividing the original image into patches of one or more sizes; (c) for each patch, determining a compressed encoding of the data contained therein where the compressed encoding can be uncompressed to provide an approximation to the patch; (d) selecting that one of the compressed encodings which, when uncompressed and added to the reference image, gives the biggest improvement therein relative to the original image; (e) adding the selected compressed encoding in uncompressed form, to the the reference image and in compressed from to a compressed representation of the original image; and (f) recursively repeating step (d) for the remaining comprossed encoding until either a desired quality level of the reference image or a maximum data size of the compressed representation is achieved.

L'invention concerne un procédé de compression d'une trame d'image composée d'un réseau de pixels sous la forme de signaux électriques numériques, ce procédé consistant à: (a) créer une image de référence comme première approximation de l'image initiale à comprimer; (b) diviser l'image initiale en plages d'une ou plusieurs dimensions; (c) déterminer, pour chaque plage, un codage comprimé des données qu'elle contient, ce codage comprimé pouvant être décomprimé pour donner une approximation de la plage; (d) choisir le codage comprimé qui, une fois décomprimé et ajouté à l'image de référence, donne à cette dernière l'amélioration la plus importante par rapport à l'image initiale; (e) ajouter le codage comprimé choisi, sous forme décomprimée, à l'image de référence et, sous forme comprimée, à une représentation comprimée de l'image initiale; et (f) répéter de manière récurrente l'étape (d) pour les codages comprimés restants jusqu'à obtention d'un niveau de qualité souhaité de l'image de référence ou d'un format de données maximal de la représentation comprimée.
