15311-024 (83-496) ABSTRACT A data demodulator assigns a binary value to the signal recorded in a transition cell based on the amplitude of the signal in the transition cell, the amplitudes of the signal in adjacent transition cells and system experience in categorizing how recording non-linearities and system no se effect the signals. The recorded analog signal in the transition cell for which a binary value is to be determined, and the recorded analog signal in a selected number of transition cells adjacent to that cell are each sampled a selected number of times. The amplitude of each of the signal samples is then converted to a digital signal symbol. Portions of the digital signal symbol are concatenated to form an interpretation vector. The vector is then used to enter a stored look-up table, addressing a particular memory location, and the binary value stored in that location is assigned to the transition cell. The look-up table is created based on system experience and the demodulating of known signals. The assigned values for a number of cells may be combined to form a code word which may be decoded using soft decoding techniques. Thus corrections may be made to the estimate assigned to a particular cell using parody checks of other known decoding techniques.
