ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Data logging apparatus for use in cathodic protection surveys by measuring the potential difference between a buried pipeline and the soil adjacent to it is described. The data logging apparatus is based on a CMOS microprocessor-based electronic circuit which digitises the analog input voltages and displays these on a liquid crystal display. The displayed voltages can be entered at the discretion of the surveyor into a random access memory for permanent storage. The unit has a keyboard which permits the user to enter data into the memory by depressing a key. Codes corresponding to various topographical features such as a river or railroad crossing can also be entered and displayed to provide some reference to the potential measurements. This coded information can also be stored in the random access memory via the keyboard. The unit operates under the control of a microprocessor in accordance with a number of predetermined programs stored in an erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM) contained in the unit. The stored data can be transferred under the control of the unit to an external EPROM or it can be transmitted via a modem over a telephone line to a host computer for analysis and presentation of the data in graphical form to enable corrosion problems in pipelines to be rapidly identified. The data logging unit also has application outside cathodic protection surveys. - 31 -
