A data managing apparatus includes a data file for sequentially storing records each record including data units corresponding to predetermined items, and an index file associated with a certain item. When a data unit is changed, a new record is produced and a change bit is generated and stored in the index file. Each change bit corresponding to one of the records stored in the data file has a value indicating whether data has been changed between adjacent records. When a request to retrieve target information relative to a certain item is received, only the change bits are read from the index file following a retrieval start position and a retrieval direction designated in the retrieval request so that a change point is quickly identified based on the read change bivs. The target information may be retrieved from the data file and provided via a display device or the like.
