ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A data handling system for use with a radiographic scanner for measuring the attenuation of radiation after passage through a medium in order to reconstruct an image representation. A source of radiation is mounted to pass radiation through the medium along a set of paths. At least one detector is located opposite of the source to measure the intensity of radiation traversing the medium along the paths. The set of data values corresponding to the intensity of radiation traversing a set of paths forms a data line. The source of radiation is rotatably mounted to irradiate the medium from a succession of angular orientations which produces a succession of data lines. A convolver convolves each data line with a filter function. The convolver comprises a data memory and a filter memory which have their output combined into a binary multiplier and transmitted to a product accumulator. The information is transmitted to a scale factor shift register and to a convolved data storage buffer. Convolved data lines from the convolver are processed by an imager which utilizes holding registers, accumulators for the information and adders for transmitting the information to a memory where it is operated on in order to determine a projection address in an image matrix. The projection address is subsequently operated on by a projection data-memory and multiplier in order to accumulate the representations of the different locations of the parts of the medium of interest. A monitor displays an image representing a section of the medium as determined by the imager. A system is also provided for setting a range of outputs of radiation of interest so that only certain scales or ranges of radiation are considered. The convolver and imager process data lines as the detectors produce subsequent data lines.
